Drinking wine can be fabulous, delicious fun on many levels. However, a lot of us have trouble getting past Wine 101 because there are so many choices. The task of getting to what you really want can be somewhat intimidating. Here are some simple thoughts to move you forward.
- Personal taste rules. If you love white wine and the dinner choice is a steak, drink the wine you like.
- You don’t have to spend a lot of money to find something you really love. One way to get great wine at affordable prices is to look for wine types that aren’t the most popular right now. Current examples are Sauvignon blanc for white wine lovers and Shiraz or malbec for red drinkers.
- Look for countries that produce first-class wines but aren’t famous as wine producers. I put Australia, New Zealand, Chile, and Argentina on this list.
- Finally, like any other topic, the best way to get to where you want to be is to use an expert. You know this works when you’re looking for a house or getting a mortgage or finding someone to give you financial advice. In the case of wine, the expert is the person at your local wine store or one of the big outlets like Total Wine and Beverage. Simply tell the person there what you want to spend and what tastes you are looking for and they should be able to set you up. Once you find one you like all you need to do is let them know that you want to try others that taste the same.
